I love my Comcast broadband... no issues with uptime, no issues with connectivity, no problems at all.

Their cable service is great too, if not as good as the broadband. My issue with the cable service is mostly that I don't like the menus, and I don't like the organization of the channels. DirecTV has great organization, with like channels grouped together. Very nice. But still, it's good service.

The phone, on the other hand, is horrid. The phone service reminds me of cell phone service from 10 years ago. Dropped calls, broken connections, digital distortion that makes me sound like the Atomic Powered Robot when I'm talking to people. I haven't had this much trouble with phones since, well, I haven't had this much trouble with phones.

But before I go all "I HATE COMCAST" (which I know is fairly common these days anyway), I wanted to find out if I'm alone or if there are others that have as much trouble as I do with Comcast.

My uncle (who lives in the same building as I) has Comcast digital voice. He says it's ok.

I've had Vonage for a few years at home. I originally got it when I was living in Montreal so I could have a US number and not pay the crazy long distance. Vonage is fine, but I'm going to jump ship to Packet8. My company uses Packet8's Virtual PBX system which allows all of employee's to have a VoIP phone with an extension number and a main trunk number. It's great for us since all of us telecommute.

Yea, I've heard the Comcast's phone service is less than desirable and that's why they are running that $33 per service triple package right now in order to hook people in for a year. Packet8 offers a year of service (with a nice Uniden cordless phone with built-in ethernet port for integration into your network) for $200 a year. Roughly, at the cost of six months of Comcast service for phone. Food for thought. Hey Jared, I feel your pain, and I may have a solution. Rather than clutter your comments with a really long note of explanation, I've created my own blog post to describe it. I'd been meaning to anyway. This will also allow what I write to be indexed for others to find it (which it's not if in the comments here, I think.)

I have their lowest end phone service right now and it works well for only about $30/month but isn't digital. They sent us a letter last week which said they are discontinuing that service and moving people to their crappy digital service automatically. Oh yeah and their digital service is twice what we are paying now. Needless to say we are jumping ship to a competitor. Boy I don't like Quest but they seem to be the better solution for phone since we don't get a discounted internet rate through Comcast for having their phone service.

Remember, if you tattoo yourself to look like a tiger, Comcast Digital Voice WILL NOT SAVE YOU!

Hey Kurt, you refer to having Comcast's "lowest end phone service" which you say isn't digital. But you may well be headed for the problem I described in my post, a problem of moving from Comcast's first generation phone service to the next generation (Digital Voice).

And as I say in the post, even if you move to a new provider, if that new provider is phone-over-cable like Digital Voice, you could still suffer a problem caused by something left from the old service, if they don't remove it. And they may not think to, again, as I explain my post.

(Just don't be confused that I refer to that first generation Comcast phone service as "Digital Phone". I know you say yours isn't "digital", but that's what they called it, as distinct from Digital Voice. I'd think it's what you have, so you may really want to pay attention to the problem I described.)

And Jared, I'll look forward to hearing if it might have been your problem, too.

I recently switched to Vonage and have been very please with the quality of the phone service. Anytime there has been technical issues, its usually been an issue with my home network. Cut my phone bill more than in half.

Thanks Charlie, don't worry I won't fall into the problem you ran into. My wife is planning on being home and supervising the Quest install pretty closely so they check everything and don't screw it up. Kinda ridiculous but we have run into Quest screwing up before and then charging us to fix their mistakes.

I have been nothing but disappointed with Comcast service as well as their customer service since the install.
